Early spring 2011, CAnMove coordinator Susanne Åkesson in collaboration with a team lead by optical physicist Dr Gabor Horváth at Eötvös University in Budapest published an article on how the Vikings might have managed to navigate under cloudy skies, using so-called sunstones. This was apparently of great interest as the article, published in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, became one of the top-ten most downloaded articles during 2011!
Have a look at the article, "On the trail of Vikings with polarized skylight: experimental study of the atmospheric optical prerequisites allowing polarimetric navigation by Viking seafarers", if you missed it last year.
Happy Easter!
